Man Utd beats St Etienne to progress in Europa League

Manchester United secured Europa League progress at a cost, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan limping off shortly after opening the scoring against St Etienne to put his EFL Cup final hopes in jeopardy.

Jose Mourinho named a surprisingly-strong line-up considering they arrived in France boasting a 3-0 lead for the last-32 return leg – a bold decision that backfired somewhat.

In-form Mkhitaryan limped off after 25 minutes in St Etienne holding the back of his right leg, having already set United on course for a 1-0 second-leg win on a night when Eric Bailly was sent off for quick-fire bookings.

Dani Carvajal returns to Real Madrid training after heart infection

Dani Carvajal  returned to training on Monday morning at Real Madrid's Valdebabas facility. One month after he was diagnosed with a heart infection , the 25-year-old took to the turf along with fitness coach Javi Mayo.  On 25 October,  Zinedine Zidane delivered the positive news that Carvajal has recovered from the virus that ruled him out since late September, and that he had returned to light training. "Things are going well with Dani. It's all positive. Today he started on the bike and it takes time.  I am happy because he is healthy, but there is a recovery process  and he started a little yesterday. Today a bit more and we will see how it evolves," said the French coach. The medical staff at Real Madrid  will not rush Carvajal back to serious physical exertion , as there is a risk that the infection could return. As a result, his work-load will increase incrementally until he is ready to re-join the squad.

His selection is said to be causing frictions in the dressing room with Messi particularly annoyed. Messi and fellow forwards Neymar and Luis Suarez are said to be appalled at Enrique's faith in Gomes. They believe their failure to hit top form is down to the 23-year-old lacklustre displays in the middle of the park. The midfielder's inclusion has come at a price with Ivan Rakitic forced to settle for a place on the bench.
