Man Utd survives Celta Vigo scare to book UEL final place where they meet Ajax

The gamble paid off. Manchester United are where Jose Mourinho thought they would be: one game from the Champions League and a second trophy this season.

But what a scare they got. An 85th goal minute goal from Facundo Roncaglia set up a finish full of tension, on the pitch as well as of it.

It was tight. Dreadfully, unexpectedly tight. Celta were so much better than last week and had enough chances to win. When the fourth official signalled six minutes of injury tme there was genuine trepidation.

It is done now, though. Ajax will be the opposition in Stockholm a week on Wednesday and Mourinho, not to mention the majority inside Old Trafford last night would have taken that when the season began.

With better finishing, Celta Vigo could even have won – and with over 75 minutes gone they were running at 67 per cent possession, to United’s 33. Had they shot, not crossed, in the last seconds of the game they may have pulled off a stunning fightback.

Gambo Mohammed joins Nigerian league champions Plateau United from Kano Pillars

Nigeria Professional Football League champions Plateau United have signed forward Gambo Mohammed on a two-year deal from Kano Pillars. Gambo, who is Kano Pillars all-time leading scorer, was rumoured to be on his way to Rivers United but has now joined the Jos club. The move ended his over a decade romance with Kano Pillars where he was a cult hero among the supporters. The 29-year old joined Kano Pillars from amateur outfit Buffalo FC in 2006 and won three NPFL titles with the club. He is the latest arrival at Plateau United following the acquisition of King Osanga, Charles Henlong, Amos Gyang and Tosin Omoyele. Other new arrivals are Henry Ochuba, Okiemute Odah, Rapheal Anyagwa, Afolabi Wahab and Peter Suswan. Video Assistant Referee(VAR) to be used in Spain

According to Marca, The Spanish FA have been given the green light to begin using VAR - Video Assistant Referee - and the technology could make its debut in the second leg of Atletico Madrid and Elche's Copa del Rey tie at the end of November. VAR is already in use in some European leagues, but there has been a mixed reaction to it, particularly in Germany   and Italy. As such, any initial use of it in Spain will be for testing and it will not be rolled out across the country straight away. This, though, is a start and a big step, one which seemed unlikely to come to fruition until Angel Maria Villar had to step aside as Spanish FA president. click here for more

Ten-man Real Madrid rescued a 3-3 draw at home to Las Palmas on Wednesday thanks to a late double from Cristiano Ronaldo. Goals from Tana, Jonathan Viera and Kevin-Prince Boateng overturned an early opener from Isco and looked set to give the visitors a shock three points, especially after Gareth Bale's red card early in the second half. But Ronaldo struck twice in three minutes in the closing stages to salvage a point for Zinedine Zidane's side that could yet prove important in the LaLiga title race, though it was not enough to take them back above Barcelona, who earlier thrashed Sporting Gijon 6-1.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the late hero as Manchester United edged Southampton 3-2 in a thrilling EFL Cup final at Wembley. Ibrahimovic gave the Red Devils the lead with a trademark precision free-kick, while Jese Lingard doubled the advantage with a composed finish. Chelsea have won the Premier League title after defeating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at the Hawthorns. A late goal from substitute Michy Batshuayi gave the Blues three points, which mean they hold an unassailable 10-point advantage over Tottenham. It is the sixth time that the Stamford Bridge side have won England’s top flight and the fourth time since 2004-05 that they have claimed the Premier League title. Diego Maradona believes Lionel Messi should have been banned for longer after allegedly insulting a linesman, as he referred to the Barcelona star as a 'teddy bear'. Messi was initially handed a four-game suspension after the incident in a World Cup qualifier against Chile, but after sitting out just one match he has already been cleared to play again. Maradona believes Argentina's star man has received preferential treatment, although he admits it is good for the team that he can feature again. He told Radio La Red: 'It makes absolutely no sense, but Leo deserved [to be sanctioned] for one more match and I say that with my heart in my hand.
