Chelsea officially signs Germany and Roma defender Antonio Rudiger

Chelsea finally made Antonio Rudiger's move to the club official Sunday as the former AS Roma defender signed a five-year contract with the Blues.

The club announced the news via its official website. In a statement, Rudiger expressed his joy at joining the Premier League champions: "It's a great feeling because not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this.

"I am looking forward to meeting up with my new team-mates, and I'm very proud to officially become a Chelsea player."

The 24-year-old joined Roma from VfB Stuttgart in 2015, with his loan move made permanent last summer. He enjoyed a fine 2016-17 campaign and played a key role in Germany's run to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Blessed with remarkable athleticism and pace for a defender, he greatly improved his vision in Italy and became a complete centre-back. He's also comfortable playing on the left or right side of a three-man defence, which made him a perfect target for the Blues.

The German becomes the first major signing of the summer for Chelsea, who are expected to add more pieces to their squad with UEFA Champions League action on the horizon.

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has identified Brazilian midfielder Paulinho as a man that fits the style of football he wants to play in his first season in charge of Barcelona. First Barcelona offer for Paulinho was rejected by his club Guangzhou, as they saw it as an inappropriate way to bid for a player. Barcelona have to change their bid plan if they really want to get the man they want. Barcelona will place a second offer above €30 million but not up to €40 million Guangzhou's asking price. Even if they are to pay €40 million, they will pay it based on the player's performance for them meaning they are not paying it once. Chelsea came through their Premier League encounter with Bournemouth 1-0 on Saturday to avoid slipping further behind in the title race. The Blues dominated the encounter on the South Coast, however they only managed to score the one goal. Eden Hazard scored that goal just after half time following a fine assist from Alvaro Morata. Real Madrid came from behind to secure a 3-1 away win against Napoli as the European Champions are through to the quarter finals with a 6-2 aggregate score. Knowing that they need to put pressure if they are going to have any chance of going through, Napoli took the initiative in the early stages of the match and were close after seven minutes. Antonio Conte has brushed aside talk of a return to Italy after he led his Chelsea side to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday. Chelsea edged United in a tense game at Stamford Bridge to keep their hopes of defending their title alive. Video Assistant Referee(VAR) to be used in Spain

According to Marca, The Spanish FA have been given the green light to begin using VAR - Video Assistant Referee - and the technology could make its debut in the second leg of Atletico Madrid and Elche's Copa del Rey tie at the end of November. VAR is already in use in some European leagues, but there has been a mixed reaction to it, particularly in Germany   and Italy. As such, any initial use of it in Spain will be for testing and it will not be rolled out across the country straight away.
