Ibrahimovic's Goal gives Man Utd EFL Cup

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the late hero as Manchester United edged Southampton 3-2 in a thrilling EFL Cup final at Wembley.

Ibrahimovic gave the Red Devils the lead with a trademark precision free-kick, while Jese Lingard doubled the advantage with a composed finish.

However, Manolo Gabbiadini’s goal just before the break livened the tie up, and he levelled proceedings early in the second half.

With less than five minutes on the clock, Ibrahimovic popped up again, heading home unmarked from close range to win the cup for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Wembley bore witness to a superb encounter as expectant United faced a Saints side looking to win just the second major trophy in their history, the first having come 41 years ago when the sides met in the FA Cup final.

Manolo Gabbiadini’s brace had Southampton dreaming as Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard strikes were cancelled out, only for Ibrahimovic to head home three minutes time to clinch a hard-fought 3-2 win.

Europa League and FA Cup glory remain further possibilities this term, but Mourinho will know his players need to up their game moving forwards.

After Gabbiadini had seen an opening goal inexplicably ruled out, under-performing United showed their ruthless edge as Ibrahimovic fired home a free-kick before Lingard scored on a third straight Wembley appearance.

But it appeared a gut-punch rather than a decisive killer-blow. Gabbiadini gave Southampton hope with a close-range goal in first-half stoppage time, before sending the success-starved fans wild with an outstanding leveller.

Oriol Romeu crashed a header off the post shortly after avoiding a second yellow card, but it was not to be for Southampton.

Ibrahimovic’s 26th goal of the season saw Mourinho become the first United manager to win a major trophy in his debut season, and earned the Portuguese a fourth League Cup triumph – a joint record with Brian Clough and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rohr:Vincent Enyeama may return to the super Eagles team.

Lille OSC coach Marcelo Bielsa has decided to make a u-turn and recall Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama back to the first team. The former Super Eagles skipper has been handed a lifeline by Bielsa following his return from a six month injury lay-off. Enyeama and 11 others were deemed surplus to requirements by Bielsa upon his appointment as coach of the French giants last summer, paving the way for them to leave the club. However, the 35-year old net minder couldn’t make a move as he was recuperating from the meniscus surgery he sustained towards the end of the previous campaign. Real Madrid have named their squad to face Eibar on Saturday and must do without the suspended Gareth Bale and now Cristiano Ronaldo, who is injured. Los Blancos therefore travel to the form side being unable to count on their star duo, as they seek to regain the initiative in the La Liga title race with a win. There has been a tense atmosphere in the Barcelona dressing room over the last few days, after a training ground bust up between Juan Carlos Unzue and Neymar in which the assistant coach compared the Brazilian's attitude to that of his contemporary, Ronaldinho. The incident apparently occurred after Unzue reproached the player for the way in which he was applying himself in training. "If you continue this way, you'll end up just like Ronaldinho," he said to Neymar, a comment that was clearly not to the liking of a player who can count the former Barcelona No.10 amongst his close friends. Cavani reveals Neymar will take PSG next penalty

Edinson Cavani has revealed that Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery has decided his side's next penalty will be taken by Neymar. The Uruguayan and the world's most expensive player were embroiled in an embarrassing public fall-out during the club's 2-0 win over Lyon in September. Neymar was seen remonstrating with Cavani as they both stood over the spot arguing over who should take the penalty, having earlier squabbled over the taking of a set-piece. Emery and the PSG hierarchy have done all they can to prevent a similar situation arising again with Cavani reportedly being offered €1million to pass on penalty duties to his Brazilian team-mate. After Cavani rejected the financial offer, Emery has been forced to step in and hand the reigns over to Neymar himself. Mourinho worried about the possibility of Fellaini leaving Manchester united

Jose Mourinho, the Manchester United manager, has admitted he is worried Marouane Fellaini will leave the club. Fellaini is out of contract at the end of the season and talks over a new deal remain at an impasse. The Belgium international midfielder rejected a new contract offer in September, and while United remain hopeful of persuading the player to stay, he will be free to talk to foreign suitors in January and Mourinho fears he could be tempted to go next summer.
